Bungie announced big changes toDestiny 2with the hope thatthey’ll help bring in novel players and release up developersfollowing massive layoffsin July .

In apost published Monday , the development squad lay out the Codename : Frontiers road map , which will lend the live - service triggerman through the end of 2025 . EachDestiny 2year will have a new makeup going forwards ; instead of one major expanding upon per year and and three episodes , the biz will now have two medium - sized expansions and four “ major updates . ”

“ We ’ve fuck create annual Expansions and are peculiarly proud ofThe Final Shape . But the truth is that they dominate almost all our growth effort . We need to free ourselves up to explore and innovate with how we deliverDestiny 2content so we can indue in areas of the game that will feel more impactful to player , ” game theatre director Tyson Green writes .

All of this will be split up equally throughout the year — so one expansion every six months , with one major update releasing alongside each expansion and another three month later . The 2nd expansion will impart new costless content to the game .

The first two expansions are calledCodename : ApolloandCodename : Behemoth , respectively , and they ’ll kick off the post - weak and Darkness saga , whichended withThe Final Shapein June . The expansions will also be following a different format than any former one , affect to a nonlinear structure that allows players to explore it in any order .
